When one thinks of a trip to Oman, deserts, camels, and the famous fairytale landscape of Muscat come to mind. However, Oman is also known for its natural beauty. There are beautiful valleys such as Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid, but much more beauty is awaiting you on the Musandam Peninsula. In this blog, we will take you on a tour of this unique northern region, with its dramatic landscapes of 2,000-meter mountains and beautiful fjords, where snorkeling and diving are also recommended.
Here are some of the highlights in Musandam
1) Khasab Castle
Built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, this castle is a special place to visit during your stay in Musandam. At the museum you can learn more about the history of this place and the castle is beautiful to see.
2) Dhow Boat Cruise
A dhow cruise is a great way to explore the coast. During this cruise, the boat makes several stops at lovely spots where you can see the islands, swim, and enjoy a barbecue from the boat.
3) One of the Most Beautiful Fjords: Khawr Njad
Oman has many fjords, and one of the most beautiful is Khawr Njad. The pure blue water seeping out between the rocks is fantastic, especially when viewed from above.
Do you love the underwater world? Then you are in the right place in this part of Oman. Here, snorkeling and diving are excellent, and in the clear water, you can find a lot of wildlife, especially at Rima Rock, many fish and caves can be found underwater.
5) Village Visits: Rima and Khimsar
This region of Oman has some exceptional villages. Not to be missed is the village of Rima. It is known for its handicrafts and produces many “al jals”, a type of traditional axe. Another particular village is Khimsar. This town, which can only be reached by boat, is very modern despite its remote location! There are also many good diving spots around Khimsar.
6) Relaxing in Dibba
One of the best places to relax in Musandam is Dibba. Here, you will find some of the most beautiful hotels and beaches in Oman. For example:
- Six Senses Hideaway Zighy Bay Resort
- Radisson Blu Resort Fujairah
- Royal Beach Hotel & Resort
- Oman Fortress Musandam Oman Highlights
Khasab is the capital of the enclave. In fact, it is merely a fishing village, and its main historical attraction is the Kasab Fortress, located in the harbor.
The fort dates back to the 17th century and was used as a military base. Later, it became the residence of the rulers of Khasab.
The two large cannons at the fort’s entrance will surely attract children’s interest. The narrow entrance leads to a large courtyard, where the children immediately look for the stairs leading to the ramparts with their towers. With dedication, they let their imaginations take over as the guardians of the fortress.
8) Jebel al-Khalim
Don’t miss the inspiring drive on Mount Jebel al-Harim, the highest peak in Musandam at 2,087 meters above sea level, known as the “Women’s Mountain”. The road is never flat, so you must take an off-road vehicle. Along the way, you will pass stunning viewpoints where you can admire the fjord and peaceful oases in a desolate landscape. Passing through small mountain villages, you will soon reach the Sey Plateau at the top. Here you can see fossils dating back millions of years.
This is the perfect place to pitch your tent and spend the night. At the top, a kind of Arabic Grand Canyon awaits you, a huge canyon where all you can hear is the sound of birds and your own breath. It is the most beautiful road in Oman, and the descent is as spectacular as the ascent.
