Traveling solo is not only a journey around the world, but it is also a journey to discover yourself. Roaming around the world alone is always a good reason to find yourself along the way. It is about things that you might end up doing which you were always afraid to experience. Traveling solo is about the plans that you don’t make, letting the journey unveil itself as you discover life-changing lessons.

When my friends or family came back from their trips, they would always be talking about life lessons which they learned. However, I never used to understand how the world can teach you about life until I decided to go on a trip on my own. I understood how much the world can teach you that you will ever learn in any classroom, job or relationship. It is about the bond that you make with people along the way. Below are 5 life lessons that I have learned:

1. People are truly amazing

Even though there are a lot of misconceptions that some places are more dangerous than others, we should never judge the people based on those. In reality, people in those places tend to be nicer and welcoming. People show kindness everywhere by inviting you to their place if you are lost and feeding you. Don’t be afraid to trust people! You will be surprised by making good friends all around the world by showing a little bit of trust.

2. You can change loneliness into independence

Being alone is often portrayed as a taboo on different social media platforms. The truth is all that matters is your perception of solitude as for me the best days of my life was backpacking alone on unfamiliar roads. I learned that I loved my own company and being myself was liberating.

3. Appreciate the small things

When you are away from home, any small thing which reminds you of your native place brings an immense amount of happiness, be it someone from your hometown or finding a restaurant which served home-cooked meals. By traveling solo, I have learned to appreciate my hometown.

4. Who my friends really are

When I decided to travel solo, there were a lot of my friends that promised to keep in touch through skype or facetime. While some of them actually kept their promises, others did not bother to even care. Even though the number was small, I realized that those were true friends.

5. Confidence is the key

Always be confident while you meet new people. Do those things which you have always been scared to do. Go for the skydiving and enjoy fun activities.
